What Mars Lines (♂️️) mean in astrolocality (aka astrocartography)
What Mars means in Astrology
Before we dive deep into the locational astrology side of things to demystify Mars lines on your natal map, it’s important to review the basics.
Mars symbolizes many things in the birth chart: action, drive, eros/libido, physical energy, your creative spark, and your instinct and style to take action, assert yourself, defend, and protect.
Your Mars placement indicates how energy would like to move through you.
Mars is also associated with cutting (literally and metaphorically), leadership, decisiveness, aggression, survival, desire, vigor, and determination.
Mars can sometimes—especially in transit when aspecting the ascendant in a challenging way—signify some type of injury, especially of a Martial style (a cut, burn, puncture, etc.).
In general, in my opinion, Mars is the planet of energy, courage, and action, and its effects by transit typically encourage us to decide and commit. Mars transits are often related to when we move or relocate.
Both sign placement and house are helpful in providing information.
NOTE: Mars is considered a “Malefic” in Hellenistic astrology, and is likely to be more troublesome for you if you have a day chart and more constructive if you have a night chart; however, the full context of your chart will tell a clearer story and in some cases the opposite is true (or an entirely different planet may be most troublesome).
To understand how Mars lines work in your natal map or astrocartography map, begin with basic dignity and debility based on the zodiac sign of your natal Mars (♂️️).
In locational astrology (aka astrolocality or astrocartography), we first look to the condition of your natal Mars (sign, house, strong aspects, etc.), because your Mars lines will also reflect that energy.
TIPS: Mars is in its joy in the 6th House.
A note on Mars in Cancer—while it is technically in fall, it’s important to keep in mind that this isn’t saying that you’re doomed or are incapable of taking action.
In fact, Mars in Cancer placements often manifest as healers or exceptionally caring in how they express Mars energy, like a career in acupuncture or as a hairstylist.
That said, as a Cancer Mars, Mars lines are unlikely to be your best option overall. Consider looking to your Moon lines (ruler of your Mars) if your Moon is in better shape and you’re interested in the associated house themes!
Having tight aspects of any kind with Mars in your natal chart will reflect on your Mars lines—trines (△) and sextiles (⚹) generally supportively bringing in the energy of the other planet, and squares (☐) and oppositions (☍) inviting growth and development through challenge with planets naturally at odds in one way or another.
You’ll also want to check whether both benefics (Venus and Jupiter) are closely aspecting your Mars, which can often signify a more supportive and constructive experience with Martian themes.
(Conjunctions depend on the planet.)
What Mars lines mean on astro-maps, including each angle (ASC, DSC, MC, IC)
Mars lines are generally places of heightened energy, vitality, drive, instinct, and passion and reflect the nature of your natal Mars.
The land* in these places typically wants to support you in Martial efforts like creative work, athletics and coaching, taking decisive action, being a proactive leader, expressing yourself directly, erotic endeavors, and defending yourself and others! You might also be pushed to develop conflict resolution skills.
Mars Ascendant lines are shown by the symbol and abbreviation ♂️️AC or ♂️️ASC on the map. ♂️️ Mars AC lines on astrolocality aka astrocartography maps are generally recommended for being seen for your passion, drive, and self-assertion + generally embodying your Mars’ energy. The land here supports self-discipline (often including physical training of some kind) and connecting to your personal power while rediscovering what gets you fired up. (Watch for over-heating literally and metaphorically, though! You might accidentally come off as confrontational)
️ Mars Descendant lines are shown by the symbol and abbreviation ♂️️DC or ♂️️DSC on the map. The land in these places supports you in connecting with those you relate to in intensity, passion, and/or drive, possibly even an ideal partner (romantic, platonic, business), finding your Mars’ signature reflected back towards you, and engaging in confident, direct, and assertive relationships! These lines can support undeniable chemistry and erotic connections while also being a bit more predisposed to conflict from overheating (depending on your natal Mars). Especially on this angle, conflict resolution skills may be key.
️Mars Midheaven or Mars Medium Coeli lines are shown by the symbol and abbreviation ♂️️MC on the map. Here, Mars’ drive, ambition, and leadership take the wheel in your career and public life, often with the potential for conflict with authority figures. As a result, the land on this line is very supportive of entrepreneurial endeavors, assertive decision-making, and operating from a place of instinct rather than deliberation. Stamina will be required, and the land on Mars MC lines is a common training ground for professional athletes and those for whom competition or physicality is a vital and important part of their public life and/or career.
️Mars Nadir or Mars Imum Coeli lines are shown by the symbol and abbreviation ♂️️ IC on the map. The IC is your most private, personal angle, aka your physical home (as well as your past/roots), and due to the energetic and more conflict-prone nature of Mars, it’s not typically a top pick for relocation. Because Mars transits are so often the impetus for us to move, having Mars as a personal houseguest is a bit of an unsettled and potentially contentious energy (perhaps with family members, roommates, and/or neighbors). Finding healthy outlets and developing nonviolent communication skills is recommended; however, a Mars IC line could potentially work well for someone who runs a personal training, hairstyling, bodywork (like acupuncture or massage) or coaching business from home, especially further away from the line where the influence is reduced somewhat.
*I reference “the land” on your Mars lines because I feel strongly about centering the land and our relationship with it (as well as those we share it with) in my practice of locational astrology or astrocartography. When I say “land” I am also referring to the water and air on your lines.
Working with the planet Mars and Martial energy:
One way you can work with the planets is by using planetary days and hours intentionally. Mars’ planetary day is Tuesday.
Combine this with astrolocality by taking action, making headway on your to-do list, drawing boundaries/cutting people off, doing creative work (especially editing), scheduling passionate date nights, and engaging in movement or channeling energy in a way that’s aligned with your personal Mars (dance, swimming, running, hiking, making music, yoga, sex, etc) on Mars day/hour on your relocated local space Mars line, or facing your Mars direction.
If you find yourself with an excess of Mars energy, it can sometimes be helpful to do something aligned with the sign opposite your Mars (think about it like being too hot, you’d usually want to cool off). Whether you feel drawn to express your Mars directly or balance it through an opposite energy, having a constructive, pro-social outlet for Mars energy is important.
Tips & reminders about Mars lines in your natal map (aka astrocartography):
Your Mars lines will reflect the nature of your natal Mars.
Mars lines are typically not the best line for a Cancer Mars or those with harsh aspects (especially from a tougher planet) to their natal Mars.
Mars is technically a malefic, so unless yours is especially well-situated (domicile, enclosed by benefics, etc), or unless you’re prioritizing Martial themes in your life (athletics, editing, coaching, hairstyling, acupuncture), it’s unlikely to be your top line.
ALWAYS look to the relocated chart for more information (and don’t forget to consider Mars parans)!
Work your angles—knowing what you want (career, relationships, etc) will help you decide which angle you’d like a planet on (or not)!
