What Sun Lines (☉) mean in astrolocality (aka astrocartography)

What the Sun means in Astrology

Before we dive deep into the locational astrology side of things to demystify Sun lines on your natal map, it’s important to review the basics.

The Sun symbolizes many things in the birth chart: our vitality, identity, ego, sense of self, willpower, the instinct to shine (and how we aspire to shine), our inner authority, our father, and even things as specific as the right eye.

Both zodiac sign and house placement are helpful in providing information about your specific Sun placement.

Begin with basic dignity and debility based on the sign of your natal Sun (☉).

In locational astrology (aka astrolocality or astrocartography), we first look to the condition of your natal Sun (sign, house, strong aspects, etc.), because your Sun lines will also carry that energy.

An image of a beautiful Black woman blocking her eyes from the sun in front of a cactus with the overlaid text: Sun Lines: how are yours? The Sun is domicile in Leo. The Sun is in detriment in Aquarius. Sun is Exalted in Aries. Sun is Fall in Libra.

TIPS: The Sun is in its joy in the 9th House, also known as the House of God (directly opposite the Moon’s joy, the House of the Goddess).

Having either luminary (Sun/Moon) in the 12th House can be considered especially challenging, as well as the 8th House.

Having tight aspects of any kind with your Sun in your birth chart will reflect on your Sun lines—trines () and sextiles () generally supportively bringing in the energy of the other planet, and squares () and oppositions (☍) inviting growth and development through challenge with planets naturally at odds in one way or another.

(Conjunctions depend on the planet.)

What Sun lines mean on astro-maps, including each angle (ASC, DSC, MC, IC)

Sun lines are generally places of heightened vitality and confidence and reflect the nature of your natal sun.

They can be very clarifying and the land* here wants to support your drive to self-actualize and connect with your purpose, as well as your energy and visibility.

  • Sun Ascendant lines are shown by the symbol and abbreviation ☉ AC or ☉ ASC on the map. The ASC is both the energy you radiate + your physical body. Sun AC lines on astrolocality aka astrocartography maps are generally recommended for boldly reconnecting with + shining in your purpose + identity—they’re often supportive for physical vitality, too! Moving unapologetically into a leadership, creative, and/or performing/public-facing roles is supported by the land on these lines.

  • Sun Descendant lines are shown by the symbol and abbreviation ☉ DC or ☉ DSC on the map. The land on these lines supports you connecting with those who stoke your shine, finding your Sun’s signature reflected back towards you, and/or embodying your Sun’s energetic signature, shining in your 1-on-1 partnerships: romantic, platonic, business. You may identify more with partners here.

  • Sun Midheaven or Sun Medium Coeli lines are shown by the symbol and abbreviation ☉ MC on the map. Here, you shine in your career and public life, often assuming a position of leadership. This can be fantastic for those in Sun-themed professions like career coaching/mentorship, entertainment/performance, being an entrepreneur, etc. (Pace yourself + be careful not to burn out!)

  • Sun Nadir or Sun Imum Coeli lines are shown by the symbol and abbreviation ☉ IC on the map. This line is one of the typical go-to lines for retirement as the IC is your most private, personal angle, aka your physical home (as well as your past/roots). While those who haven’t yet retired may wish to place the Sun’s warmth and radiance a different area of their chart or life, it is typically a lovely energy to invite in as your houseguest. The land on this line may also support you in a desire to build your legacy or connect with your family heritage and/or shine in your hospitality.

*I reference “the land” on your Sun lines because I feel strongly about centering the land and our relationship with it (as well as those we share it with) in my practice of locational astrology or astrocartography. When I say “land” I am also referring to the water and air on your lines.

Tips and reminders about Sun lines in your natal map (aka astrocartography):

  • Your Sun lines will reflect the nature of your natal Sun.

  • Sun lines are typically not the best line for Libra Suns or those with harsh aspects (especially from a tougher planet) to their natal Sun, as a “fallen” planet or luminary can be much more challenging, especially on an angle (AC/DC/MC/IC). To activate Sun themes without going to a Sun line as a Libra, you might consider your Venus lines instead, because Venus rules your Sun.

  • ALWAYS look to the relocated chart for more information (and don’t forget to consider Sun parans)!

  • Work your angles—knowing what you want (career, relationships, etc) will help you decide which angle you’d like a planet on (or not)!
