What Moon Lines (☽) mean in astrolocality (aka astrocartography)
What the Moon means in Astrology
Before we dive deep into the locational astrology side of things to demystify Moon lines on your natal map, it’s important to review the basics.
The Moon symbolizes many things in the birth chart: our mother, our wants/needs, the instinct to have a home, our feelings, our emotions, how we connect, where we feel vulnerable, our comfort zone, how we nurture/yearn to be nurtured, and sometimes how we were not nurtured.
Both sign placement and house are helpful in providing information.
Begin with basic dignity and debility based on the sign of your natal Moon (☽).
In locational astrology (aka astrolocality or astrocartography), we first look to the condition of your natal Moon (sign, house, strong aspects, etc.), because your Moon lines will also reflect that energy.
TIPS: The Moon is considered to be in its joy in the 3rd House, also known as the place of the Goddess.
Having any luminary (Sun/Moon) in the 12th House can be considered especially challenging, as well as the 8th House.
Having tight aspects of any kind with your Moon in your natal chart will reflect on your Moon lines—trines (△) and sextiles (⚹) generally supportively bringing in the energy of the other planet, and squares (☐) and oppositions (☍) inviting growth and development through challenge with planets naturally at odds in one way or another.
(Conjunctions depend on the planet.)
What Moon lines mean on astro-maps, including each angle (ASC, DSC, MC, IC)
Moon lines are generally places of heightened emotions and intuition and will reflect the nature of your natal moon.
They can be very psychic, instinctual, nurturing, dreamy, and the land* here wants to support your connection, emotional comfort, and/or introspection.
Moon Ascendant lines are shown by the symbol and abbreviation ☽ AC or ☽ ASC on the map. ☽ Moon AC lines on astrolocality aka astrocartography maps are generally recommended for self-care and self-expression—the land on these lines supports you wearing your heart on your sleeve, and/or stepping into or literally “embodying” an intuitive role as the ASC in the natal chart is both indicative of the energy you radiate most obviously to others as well as your physical body.
Moon Descendant lines are shown by the symbol and abbreviation ☽ DC or ☽ DSC on the map. The land on these lines can support you connecting deeply with others, finding your natal Moon’s energy reflected back towards you by others, and/or embodying your Moon’s energetic signature in your relationships with others, including romantic partners, clients, mentors, etc.
Moon Midheaven or Moon Medium Coeli lines are shown by the symbol and abbreviation ☽ MC on the map. Here, your emotional landscape, needs, and wants take public, center stage. The land here wants to support you in Moon-themed professions like counseling, caregiving, hospitality, creativity, etc—in short, doing work that makes you feel fulfilled more than in the spotlight per se (although you have a good shot at both here).
Moon Nadir or Moon Imum Coeli lines are shown by the symbol and abbreviation ☽ IC on the map. Typically, the land on this line wants to support you in feeling “at home” as the IC is your most private, personal angle, aka your physical home (as well as your past/roots). Who doesn’t like to feel safe, cared for, and comfortable at home, as though the Moon is your permanent houseguest? Typically, a great place to enjoy creature comforts + connection.
*I reference “the land” on your Moon lines because I feel strongly about centering the land and our relationship with it (as well as those we share it with) in my practice of locational astrology or astrocartography. When I say “land” I am also referring to the water and air on your lines.
Tips and reminders about Moon lines in your natal map (aka astrocartography):
Your Moon lines will reflect the nature of your natal Moon.
Moon lines are typically not the best line for Scorpio Moons or those with harsh aspects (especially from a tougher planet) to their natal Moon, as a “fallen” planet or luminary can be much more challenging, especially on an angle (AC/DC/MC/IC).
ALWAYS look to the relocated chart for more information (and don’t forget to consider Moon parans)!
Work your angles—knowing what you want (career, relationships, etc) will help you decide which angle you’d like a planet on (or not)!
