What Pluto Lines (♇) mean in astrolocality (aka astrocartography)
(NOTE: Pluto in astrocartography has two symbols—the one pictured above, and ♇, which is used below as it’s the version with a unicode symbol)
What Pluto means in Astrology
Before we dive deep into the locational astrology side of things to demystify Pluto lines on your natal map, it’s important to review the basics of Pluto in astrology.
Pluto symbolizes many things in the natal chart: deep, transformative change, power, death (typically metaphorically) and rebirth, revolution, control, and our instinct to pursue empowerment and purpose through cycles of breakdown and reconstruction—much like the phoenix.
Pluto is associated with initiation (consider that the Eleusynian/Ceres+Prosperine rites were likely based on a ritualistic rehearsal of the death and rebirth process), magic and sorcery, scandals, secrets and subversion, intensity and depth, and anything subterranean or subconscious in nature, like psychology and shadow work, that brings what is hidden to light.
Both sign placement and house are helpful in providing information.
To understand how Pluto lines work in your natal map or astrocartography map, begin with basic dignity and debility based on the zodiac sign of your natal Pluto (♇).
In locational astrology (aka astrolocality or astrocartography), we first look to the condition of your natal Pluto (sign, house, strong aspects, etc.), because your Pluto lines will also reflect that energy.
TIPS: Pluto isn’t considered in Hellenistic Astrology as any zodiac sign’s ruler—it was discovered in 1930 and is typically considered more of a generational outer planet.
Similarly, because house joy is an ancient technique, Pluto doesn’t have a preferred house in Hellenistic Astrology (in fact, some Hellenistic Astrologers ignore outer planets entirely).
Modern astrologers associate Pluto with the 8th house and Scorpio.
A note on Pluto in Libra—while it is technically in modern fall, it’s important to keep in mind that this isn’t saying that you’re unable to forge a healthy relationship with your personal power or that you’re doomed to experience controlling or abusive relationships your entire life (there are soo many factors in a birth chart and fall (which for outer planets is still debated as to whether it exists or which sign it would be) is just one of them).
One way to alchemise this placement would be to intentionally welcome the healthy types of transformation and shadow work that relationships of all kinds offer you, perhaps in a supportive therapeutic environment.
That said, especially due to their reputation for being quite intense, Libra Pluto lines may not be your best option overall (even if you align with its somewhat-controversial modern rulership). Consider looking to your Venus lines (ruler of your Pluto in Libra) if they’re in better shape!
Having tight aspects of any kind with Pluto in your natal chart will reflect on your Pluto lines—trines (△) and sextiles (⚹) generally supportively bringing in the energy of the other planet, and squares (☐) and oppositions (☍) inviting growth and development through challenge with planets naturally at odds in one way or another.
(Conjunctions depend on the planet.)
What Pluto lines mean on astro-maps, including each angle (ASC, DSC, MC, IC)
Pluto lines are generally places of deep, transformative change, meeting your shadow, realigning with your sense of purpose, and encountering a sense of depth and intensity (but can also be associated with themes like danger, control, and abuse). They will reflect the nature of your natal Pluto.
The land* in these places typically wants to support you in Plutonian efforts like personal, professional, and relational transformation, self-discovery, revolutionary change, and connecting with the evolutionary cycles and essential-but-challenging shadow work indicated in your natal promise!
NOTE: Pluto lines are notorious for being quite intense and to be honest are very rarely my top pick for relocation or travel unless you’re craving or heavily involved with Plutonian work. Here, caution and awareness are urged—if you choose to travel to or live on a Pluto line, please prioritize your safety.
Pluto Ascendant lines are shown by the symbol and abbreviation ♇ AC or ♇ ASC on the map. ♇ Pluto AC lines on astrolocality aka astrocartography maps are generally recommended for being seen for your personal power + embodying your Pluto’s energy. The land here supports deep, transformational self-discovery and re-alignment (often during or following a difficult time of reckoning with power outside of your control), and stepping into the role of therapist/psych, initiated Shaman or plant medicine-worker, shadow-worker, and/or spiritualist in a general or specific sense. These lines can sometimes gift an air of intoxicating magnetism that accompanies someone directly reckoning with their own personal shadow—a very femme fatale energy.
️Pluto Descendant lines are shown by the symbol and abbreviation ♇ DC or ♇ DSC on the map. The land in these places supports you in connecting with others engaged in similar paths of self-discovery, breaking bad habits, and/or obsessive, controlling, and jealous people. As Pluto’s energy is notoriously intense, so too can be the chemistry, magnetism, and/or repulsion and tumult in relationships on this line. Here, you can find your Pluto’s signature reflected back towards you, and overall experience depth and transformation in your important connections. This land can also support you in inhabiting the role of the Plutonian in your close relationships with others (clients, romantic, platonic, business).
️Pluto Midheaven or Pluto Medium Coeli lines are shown by the symbol and abbreviation ♇MC on the map. Here, Pluto sets the agenda in your career and public life, often with the gift of power and success especially for those with a well-aspected Pluto and who work in investigative, meaningful, and transformative or psychological careers. The land on this line is very supportive of powerful leadership, authenticity, and purposeful work of all kinds, especially when related to meaningful change, research, finding core issues, and exposing what is hidden to light. At times, this line can also signal power struggles, control, or abuse at work, so the land on this line is typically most supportive for people whose Pluto is well-aspected and who work in related careers.
️Pluto Nadir or Pluto Imum Coeli lines are shown by the symbol and abbreviation ♇ IC on the map. Pluto IC can be suitable if you like to feel like a powerful, secretive hermit at home and/or if you’re working from home in a Plutonian field. The land here wants to support you in fostering a home that feels like a magical sanctuary or safe space for you to reflect and be alone with your transformative process. For some, there might be themes around uncovering your family’s secrets or hidden agendas in these places—and, perhaps, being forced to reckon with and transmute them meaningfully. Pluto IC lines are often areas where people feel inexplicably drawn and feel they may have had a past life or similar experience (perhaps an ancestral connection).
*I reference “the land” on your Pluto lines because I feel strongly about centering the land and our relationship with it (as well as those we share it with) in my practice of locational astrology or astrocartography. When I say “land” I am also referring to the water and air on your lines.
Working with the planet Pluto and Plutonian energy:
One way you can work with the planets is by using planetary days and hours intentionally. While Pluto (as an outer planet) doesn’t have an assigned planetary day nor hour, you can work with the traditional ruler of the sign Pluto falls in your chart (Not sure who the traditional ruler is? Click here!).
Some astrologers consider Pluto to be related to Martial energy, so it’s another great option! Mars’ planetary day is Tuesday.
Combine this with astrolocality by offering or booking therapy, engaging with initiated spiritual practitioners and/or plant medicine, digging into deep, meaningful research, or doing personal shadow work on a relevant planetary day/hour (like Mars’!) on your relocated local space Pluto line, and/or facing your Pluto direction.
Tips & reminders about Pluto lines in your natal map (aka astrocartography):
Your Pluto lines will reflect the nature of your natal Pluto.
Pluto lines are possibly not the best line for a Libra Pluto (try Venus lines instead!) or those with harsh aspects (especially from a tougher planet like Mars or Saturn) to their natal Pluto.
Because Pluto rules transformation of many kinds including topics like both metaphorical and literal death and abuse, Pluto planetary lines should be approached with respect or perhaps avoided in cases where there’s not otherwise a strong outlet for Plutonian energy (like a career in psychoanalysis, spirituality, astrology, hospice, or forensic science).
Rather than Pluto lines, consider Pluto parans—especially when Pluto is paired with a benefic (Venus or Jupiter), the change offered on parans has the potential to feel much more supportive while still being helpfully transformational!
ALWAYS look to the relocated chart for more information.
Work your angles—knowing what you want (career, relationships, etc) will help you decide which angle you’d like a planet on (or not)!
