What Neptune Lines (♆) mean in astrolocality (aka astrocartography)

What Neptune means in Astrology

Before we dive deep into the locational astrology side of things to demystify Neptune lines on your natal map, it’s important to review the basics of Neptune in astrology.

Neptune symbolizes many things in the natal chart: creativity, spirituality, imagination, beliefs, and your instinct to transcend the material reality of space-time and experience something mystical, beyond-the-mundane, or simply the unseen—including how you might pursue or experience a flow state.

It often shows us where and how we yearn to dissolve or experience complete connection with the cosmos and/or others.

Neptune is associated with altered states of being (and, at times, addiction to pursuing them) from meditation to plant medicine, film, photography, music, and creative self-expression in general as well as seemingly disconnected topics like horses (especially alongside 12H placements), illusion/deception, and the sea.

Both sign placement and house are helpful in providing information.

FUN FACT: Some astrologers look to Neptune, especially when in connection with the Moon by aspect, for more information about potential psychic gifts.

To understand how Neptune lines work in your natal map or astrocartography map, begin with basic dignity and debility based on the zodiac sign of your natal Neptune (♆).

In locational astrology (aka astrolocality or astrocartography), we first look to the condition of your natal Neptune (sign, house, strong aspects, etc.), because your Neptune lines will also reflect that energy.

TIPS: Neptune isn’t considered in Hellenistic Astrology as any zodiac sign’s ruler—it was discovered in 1846 and is typically considered more of a generational outer planet.

Similarly, because house joy is an ancient technique, Neptune doesn’t have a preferred house in Hellenistic Astrology (in fact, some Hellenistic Astrologers ignore outer planets entirely).

Modern astrologers often associate Neptune with the 12th house and Pisces.

A note on Neptune in Aquarius—while it is technically in modern fall, it’s important to keep in mind that this isn’t saying that you’re doomed or lack creativity or spirituality (similar to Mercury in Pisces, it may be quite the opposite!).

That said, Aquarius Neptune lines may not be your best option (if you align with its somewhat-controversial modern rulership). Consider looking to your Uranus lines (modern ruler of your Neptune) if they’re in better shape!

NOTE: Saturn lines are the traditional ruler of an Aquarius Neptune—especially because Saturn is a malefic, it’s rarely the top pick for lines, but like everything in astrology, they also have their upsides (focus, discipline, mentorship/mastery). That said, even in the best use cases, they’re often more enjoyable as a paran and/or via remote activation.

Having tight aspects of any kind with Neptune in your natal chart will reflect on your Neptune lines—trines () and sextiles () generally supportively bringing in the energy of the other planet, and squares () and oppositions (☍) inviting growth and development through challenge with planets naturally at odds in one way or another.

(Conjunctions depend on the planet.)

What Neptune lines mean on astro-maps, including each angle (ASC, DSC, MC, IC)

Neptune lines are generally places of heightened spirituality, creativity, psychic abilities, and glamour (but can also bring fogginess, deception, and hard-to-diagnose issues or illness). They will reflect the nature of your natal Neptune.

The land* in these places typically wants to support you in Neptunian efforts like creative work or spiritual work (either on the producing or receiving end), transcending your everyday reality in search of universal truths, and connecting with the mystical, artistic, and intuitive parts of your natal promise!

  • Neptune Ascendant lines are shown by the symbol and abbreviation ♆ AC or ♆ ASC on the map. ♆ Neptune AC lines on astrolocality aka astrocartography maps are generally recommended for being seen for your intuition, spirituality, and creativity + embodying your Neptunes’ energy. The land here supports intuition and to an extent dissociation (think of Brian Wilson’s advice to “hold on to your ego”), and stepping into the role of artist or mystic in a general or specific sense. These areas can also support bringing a glamorous energy to your appearance and (assuming your Neptune is relatively happy in your natal chart) might also be a great place for a photo shoot. (Take extra-good care of your physical health here, though!)

  • ️Neptune Descendant lines are shown by the symbol and abbreviation ♆ DC or ♆ DSC on the map. The land in these places supports you in connecting with artists, dreamers, and those who naturally transcend space-time, finding your Neptune’s signature reflected back towards you, and overall enjoying a sense of connection with creatives and spiritualists (be aware that deception or fogginess and a lack of healthy boundaries can also be a way that Neptune shows up in relationships)! This land can also support you in inhabiting the role of the ethereal creative or mystic in your relationships with others.

  • ️Neptune Midheaven or Neptune Medium Coeli lines are shown by the symbol and abbreviation MC on the map. Here, Neptune watches over your career and public life, often with the gift of transcendence especially for storytelling and artistic or spiritual careers. The land on this line is very supportive of dreamy, intuitive, and creative work of all kinds, especially when it works towards building or reminding us that we’re all connected (like humanitarian work). At times, this line can also signal a lack of clarity at work, so the land on this line is typically most supportive for people whose Neptune is well-aspected and who work in related careers.

  • ️Neptune Nadir or Neptune Imum Coeli lines are shown by the symbol and abbreviation ♆IC on the map. Neptune IC can be great if you like to feel dreamy and ethereal at home and/or if you’re working from home in a Neptunian field. The land here wants to support you in fostering a home that feels like living in a dream, connects you easily with your own sense of spirituality and creative flow, and where punctuality and structure aren’t a huge focus. For some, there might be (often invisible or hard-to-diagnose) issues with the physical structure of the home or just a struggle to feel rooted and supported, if that’s important to you at home.

*I reference “the land” on your Neptune lines because I feel strongly about centering the land and our relationship with it (as well as those we share it with) in my practice of locational astrology or astrocartography. When I say “land” I am also referring to the water and air on your lines.

Working with the planet Neptune and Neptunian energy:

One way you can work with the planets is by using planetary days and hours intentionally. While Neptune (as an outer planet) doesn’t have an assigned planetary day nor hour, you can work with the traditional ruler of the sign Neptune falls in your chart (Not sure who the traditional ruler is? Click here!).

Some astrologers consider Neptune to be related to Venusian energy, so it’s another great option! Venus’ planetary day is Friday.

Combine this with astrolocality by offering or booking divinatory & creative work, enjoying the arts, participating in photography/film/glamour, connecting with the unseen world, and/or engaging in your spirituality on a relevant planetary day/hour (like Venus’!) on your relocated local space Neptune line, and/or facing your Neptune direction.

Tips & reminders about Neptune lines in your natal map (aka astrocartography):

  • Your Neptune lines will reflect the nature of your natal Neptune.

  • Your Neptune lines will reflect the nature of your Neptune + Neptune lines are possibly not the best line for a Aquarius Neptune (try Uranus lines instead!) or those with harsh aspects (especially from a tougher planet like Mars or Saturn) to their natal Neptune.

  • Because Neptune rules altered states of being and is sometimes prominent in the chart of people who experience addiction, Neptune lines should be approached with respect or perhaps avoided in cases where there’s a difficult relationship with substances.

  • ALWAYS look to the relocated chart for more information (and don’t forget to consider Neptune parans)!

  • Work your angles—knowing what you want (career, relationships, etc) will help you decide which angle you’d like a planet on (or not)!
